2011.11.09 -- Backpacking Pt Reyes

We got the bug for a little backpacking in November and decided to go to Pt Reyes. Pt Reyes is not backcountry camping because there are pit toilets and potable water, but the destination is beautiful and I admit it is pretty nice not to have to dig a hole to go to the bathroom.

We spent two nights, one just off the water in Wildcat Camp, and one up on the ridge in Sky Camp. We parked at the Bear Valley Visitor Center (park headquarters), and had a 7 mile day down to Wildcat Camp on the coast, an 8 mile day past Arch Rock and back up to Sky Camp, and finally a 4 mile route over Mt Whittenburg and back out to the trailhead.

We had absolutely perfect weather, so nice that I plan to return every November that I can, and may even try January.

The trailhead at Bear Valley Visitor Center.

An irresistible log off trail on the early part of the double track Bear Valley trail.

Lunch in Divide Meadow.

Looping around south of Glen Camp on the Glen Trail.

On the ridge above Wildcat Camp. Ridiculously peaceful ocean in the background. Our campsite was near the water right by the cut to the left of Robert.

On the way out for a short (~3 mile) diversionary hike from Wildcat Camp to the north.

Happy hikers. Ridiculously calm ocean in the background. I still cant believe how little wind there was.

Alemere Falls is the white spot up the coast. We intended to make it there but decided we had enough hiking for the day and returned to camp.

Eating dinner back at Wildcat Camp.

We got up at 4:15 to see the Lunar eclipse and were somewhat disappointed.

On the way back up the hill from Wildcat to the Coast Trail. There was quite a bit of up and down on this hike.

John on the Coast Trail.

Erick and Robert on the Coast Trail. Note the quite large pack that Erick is carrying!

More of the beautiful Coast Trail. I will note that parts of this trail appear to be an erosian channel: very narrow and not much fun to hike on, but overall we enjoyed the trails.

Overlooking Arch Rock. Just ahead the trail plummets down to the coast and then we have a big nasty climb back up to Sky Camp which is above this elevation on the upper right of the picture.

We had lunch above Arch Rock and Robert took 37 million pictures of this critter. Only these two came out.

Partway back up the slog to Sky Camp. Perfect weather indeed.

Only 1/2 a mile to go with 8 miles and alot of delta Z behind us.

Dinner at Sky Camp. I dehydrated some of Larissa's homemade chili and it worked out great! A new backpacking must have.

Erick all bundled up for night time. Once we were in the tent we were very warm.

Saddled up for the 4 miles hike over Mt Whittenburg on the way back to the Bear Valley trailhead.
